1911
January 15th: Foundation of the
German School of Puebla with 10 German
elementary school students and a German teacher.
Soon after, Mexican students are integrated.
1920 - 1922
School principal: Hugo Leicht. After
leaving the school direction, Hugo Leicht writes
the (still) famous book “The Streets of Puebla”.
Today, one of the streets in the Colonia
Clavijero bears his name. Incorporation of the
Elementary and Middle School into the system of
the Mexican Ministry of Public Education SEP,
and official reconnaissance by the German
authorities.
1923
The German Government’s official
middle school exam (Realschulabschluss) is held
for the first time. This is repeated in 1925 and
1926, and regularly from 1986 on.
1926
The exam to receive the Abitur (German
High School degree) is held for the first time:
of the four students, all four passed.
1934-1969
School principal: the legendary
Professor Fritz Theiss. The school has an
attendance of 74 students. In the following 34
years, he and his associate Wolgang Boege and
Alfons Schmitz will transform the “Colegio” into
the most prestigious school in Puebla, with up
to 1,500 attending students.

1940
Classes from Kindergarten up to High
School are taught in German, except for the
“History of Mexico” and Spanish courses. The
school consists of 200 students. Formation of
the first Parents Association.
1943 - 1945
Due to the circumstances of the
Second World War, Professor Fritz Theiss is
substituted for a Mexican supervisor. Still,
Professors Boege and Schmitz continue working in
the school. The Colegio is one of the very few
German schools in the world that continues
operating without interruption during the war.
1946
Professor Fritz Theiss is re-instated
as Principal of the German school.
1946 - 1947
Purchase of land for the school and
construction of the first building at the 24th
street Norte, number 2003 in Puebla, consisting
of 10 classrooms. The Colegio is property of Mr.
Theiss, Schmitz and Boege. Thankful ex-students
contribute with loans and donations. The school
adopts the name of the famous German scientist
Alexander von Humboldt (1769- 1859), who is
declared “Benemérito de la Patria” (meritorious
of the further land) by President Benito Juárez.
1947 - 1969
Continuous growth of the school
thanks to its unique pedagogical quality,
reaching 1,500 students. Construction of
additional buildings and all-over modernization
of the facilities and equipment. |
